France
Vence

Vence lies in the department of Alpes Maritimes between Nice and Antibes. Vence is like St- Paul-de-Vence one of the pearls of the hinterland and one of those, most beautifully situated. It is easy to understand the interest that is accorded to both Vence and St-Paul, situated close to each other, by the way. Both towns have a big historical appeal, and the region has, for a long time, been a flourishing cultural centre.

Vence is a picturesque old cathedral town, set on a hilltop at 400 metres altitude. It is well protected to the north by 1000 meter high mountains. Five gates lead into Vence’s medieval quarter. The oldest and most impressive is Porte de Peyra, from the 14th century. Having passed through this you will arrive at Place du Peyra, the town’s most idyllic square with its century old chestnut tree and the most beautiful of all the fountains in the town. This vase-shaped fountain from 1822 is the most photographed motive in Vence. In front of Porte de Peyra is Place du grand Jardin, a very lively square. Here you will find a couple of big cafés, where the locals and the tourists gather together.

The town’s cathedral, one of the smallest in France, was built in the 10th century, but the actual building dates back to the 12th and the 15th century. The greatest tourist attraction is Chapelle du Rosaire, mostly known under the name, the Matisse chapel. Henri Matisse designed the chapel and it was built in 1947-51 to express his gratitude towards some nuns who helped him fight a serious illness. Matisse decorated the chapel in a very simple, but strong style.

At the top of Col de Vence (970 m) there are splendid views, to one side, of the white summits of the Alps and to the other side of the Mediterranean. From here, one realizes the beautiful location of Vence.
