The city of Lucca has many traces of its Roman past. The straight streets forming square patterns are remarkable. Only Piazza del Mercato has an elliptic shape which corresponds to the old amphi-theatre.

It is one of Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance ramparts and an evening walk here is very much worth doing. Lucca is an exciting city for shopping with lots of clothes and jeweller’s shops.
The medieval tower of Torre dei Guinigi with its trees growing at the top is the landmark of Lucca. From here, you can enjoy the views of Lucca and the surrounding area. Piazza Napoleone, named after Napoleon (his sister Elisa Baciocchi was mayor of Lucca), is every summer home for a music festival with concerts given by famous musicians.
