Perugia

Perugia

Perugia is the capital city of the region of Umbria in central Italy. Perugia is very nearly at the exact centre of Italy and is known as the “Green heart of Italy”. Perugia is highly situated on a hill on the right of the river Tiber.

A holiday in the area around Perugia offers good possibilities for exploring the stunning green, mountainous countryside of Umbria. Perugia is not as visited as the capital city of Tuscany, Florence. In return, Assisi, situated east of Perugia, has become a national sanctuary. Lake Trasimeno is situated west of Perugia. To the south you will find the small village of Deruta, which is famous for its porcelain.

Corso Vannucci, the main street

Perugia was among the most important cities of the Etruscans.

The ancient Perugia is first mentioned in the account of the war of 310 or 309 B.C. between Etruscans and the Romans. In Perugia there are still remains from the old city walls, which were build more than 2.200 years ago. Perugia is a lively medieval walled hill town with many historic buildings, people-filled squares, modern shops, cafes, and restaurants together with a very charming old town centre with its narrow, winding streets, ancient fountains and medieval stone houses. On your way through the old streets of Perugia you will come to experience a city, which during the last 2000 years has been build upon old Etruscan and Roman foundations.

In the town centre is situated one of the most important squares in Italy - (the former Piazza Grande ) – with its surrounding historic buildings and the impressive fountain Fontana Maggiore from 1278 and Palazzo dei Piori from 1297.

Piazza IV Novembre

Perugia is also home to an old university and a special university for foreigners (Università per Stranieri), which primarily teaches Italian language.

Perugia also hosts the most important jazz festival in Italy (Umbria Jazz), which takes place each summer. Some of the biggest names in jazz music have played here.
