Monterosso is the most northern of the five coastal towns in Cinque Terre and with its 1700 inhabitants it is also the biggest. The oldest part of the town lies on top of the hill of San Cristoforo, which shares the village in two. During the 12th and 13th century the city experienced strong population growth. Because of this, more and more had to move down the hill and instead live by the Branco River. This part of the town, known as Monte Rosso Vecchio (Old Monterosse), is still intact.The town is dominated by the old castle ruin, "Castrum Obertengo", which is highly situated, and the beautiful church. Monterosso has the longest beach in the Cinque Terre, which makes it one of the most popular cities in the region.
