Very interesting medieval village with a magnificent feudal castle built on the banks of the Rhône River in the beginning of the 15th century. At the other side of the river lies the château de Beaucaire, King René’s residence when he was not in Aix. Tarascon is still today associated with the legend that supposedly took place here in the year 48A.D. The legend tells that the holy Martha arrived from Palestine to Tarascon at the time when the town was ruled by a dragon looking monster. With great courage the holy Martha succeeded in taming the monster. Since that time, pilgrims come to visit the church, St. Martha, which was built in the 12th century, in her honour.
